In 1981, our Alameda, California apartment had empty white walls. I knew I wanted to paint a seascape at sunset, but the day for capturing the setting sun was void of clouds and my opportunity to photograph it was limited. So I had to accept the consequences of a cloudless sky. To compensate for this I chose to paint the image as large as I could using the canvas I had available. In the end it took at least four photographs to refer to for me to complete this seascape as envisioned.

Oil painter, printmaker, muralist, faux finish artist and educator, BEN SATUREN, was inspired to portray ocean life while snorkeling in the Red Sea where he observed subjects rarely portrayed on canvas. Awarded “Artist of the Year” by Project Reefkeeper, Ben’s images include wildlife, landscapes, still life, and geometric abstracts. His styles range from super-realism to cartoon characters to faux finishes.
